Two Meenzer Science-Schoppe events are still to come as part of “Mainz lebt auf seinen Plätzen”

This summer, the Meenzer Science-Schoppe is once again bringing the latest science to life for everyone. As part of the city’s event series “Mainz lebt auf seinen Plätzen,” the MAINZER WISSENSCHAFTSALLIANZ, in collaboration with the State Capital of Mainz, invites you to four scientific lectures on the stage at the Markt (in front of the cathedral).

We’ve already had two events—and two more fascinating lectures are coming up on Wednesday, August 26, and Wednesday, September 2. Admission is free, and registration is not required. Both events begin at 7:00 p.m.

On August 26, Prof. Dr. Hanna Fischer from the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz will provide insights into the diversity of the German language. In a presentation titled “My Region, My Language—Dialects in the 21st Century,” she will examine the dynamics of regional languages in Germany and explain how dialects are changing in the 21st century, the role that regional dialects play, and why regional linguistic diversity remains significant even today.

Tobias Haelke, Sven Scherer, Teresa Reif, and Prof. Dr. Sven Pagel from Mainz University of Applied Sciences will conclude the summer series on September 2. In their presentation, they will share insights from the development of IT education programs for refugees in Rhineland-Palatinate. In the project “Strengthening Digital Skills for Self-Determination and Mobility,” they are investigating how fostering digital skills can enhance refugees’ social participation and career prospects.

Background: Knowledge at the Heart of Mainz

Mainz carries “Knowledge at Its Heart”—and brings it straight to your mind! Through this partnership with the state capital of Mainz, the MAINZER WISSENSCHAFTSALLIANZ uses events and videos to share information about research “Made in Mainz,” aiming to spark curiosity, inspire a spirit of inquiry, and convey the relevance of science to both individuals and society. www.wissenimherzen.mainz.de

The Thematic Years

Since 2015, the MAINZ SCIENCE ALLIANCE, together with the state capital, has been announcing Thematic Years, inviting scientific and cultural institutions, companies, associations, schools, educational institutions, the media, and all interested citizens to participate. The Thematic Years enhance understanding of science and research and promote networking and dialogue between citizens, businesses, and institutions with the scientific community. The annual themes focus on specific strengths or challenges in Mainz and the surrounding area as the center of these joint activities. The Thematic Years are supported by the State of Rhineland-Palatinate.

The MAINZ SCIENCE ALLIANCE

The MAINZ SCIENCE ALLIANCE (MWA) brings together universities, scientific institutions, and companies from Mainz and the surrounding area to jointly promote science and research and to strengthen Mainz as a hub for cutting-edge research. In 2008, key players in Mainz’s scientific community began to forge closer ties not only among themselves but also with the citizens of Mainz. Following Mainz’s successful bid to become a “City of Science” in 2011, the MAINZ SCIENCE ALLIANCE association was founded in 2013 with 18 members. Today, the network has 34 members. www.wissenschaftsallianz-mainz.de
