How to Dispose of Gas Cylinders Properly

The recent fire at the waste-to-energy plant on Ingelheimer Aue in Mainz has once again shown that gas cylinders must be disposed of properly, as they are classified as hazardous waste.
The easiest way is to return them to a specialty retailer. Retailers will usually take back the old cylinder or cartridge when you purchase a new one. In addition, some manufacturers offer return options in exchange for a deposit.

In addition, residents of Mainz may drop off standard household gas cylinders—such as those used for camping or in soda makers—at the hazardous waste collection point at the North Waste Disposal Center in Budenheim. Under no circumstances, however, should gas cylinders and gas cartridges be disposed of with household trash—nor should they simply be thrown into the containers at recycling centers.

If in doubt, the staff on site can help and show you the correct disposal options. For further questions on this topic, please contact the Waste Advisory Service at 06131 - 12 34 56.
