The state capital of Mainz welcomes and supports Christopher Street Day (CSD), which will take place this coming Saturday, July 25, 2026, in the city center. At the city’s reception for CSD, Mayor Nino Hasse emphasized that the gathering is an important symbol of diversity and a commitment to democratic values—especially in times of increasing hostility. 

“Mainz remains a place of diversity! This makes it all the more important to me that we work together here in Mainz to promote equality for LGBTIQ people. In Mainz, we stand firmly and unequivocally behind the human rights of queer people,” explains Mayor Nino Haase.

• The City of Mainz is committed to supporting the LGBTIQ community beyond the CSD:
  This year, the working group “Hate Crimes Against LGBTIQ People and Women” of the municipal prevention council is continuing to develop a catalog of measures to combat violence and discrimination targeting specific groups.
• The filling of a new part-time position at the Coordination Office for LGBTIQ Equality will allow for a renewed focus on lesbian visibility as well as on the concerns of transgender and intersex people.
• To promote a queer culture of commemoration and remembrance, the City Archives, in cooperation with the Coordination Office for LGBTIQ Equality, hosted an event at the City Archives and offered the public a glimpse into the existing collection on Mainz’s LGBTIQ history.
• The Public Relations Department, mainzplus City Marketing, and the Coordination Office for LGBTIQ Equality discussed various issues related to LGBTIQ visibility in city marketing and public relations and paved the way for corresponding measures.
• For the first time, on Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20, 2025, Mayor Haase, together with Ms. Weitzel from the German Society for Trans* and Inter*, raised the transgender flag on the city’s flagpoles in front of City Hall at Große Bleiche 46.
• Once again, the city supported queer youth work, including through the Coordination Office for LGBTIQ Equality and its participation in the fourth youth conference.

This year’s CSD motto, “Embrace Diversity, Secure Human Rights, Defend Democracy,” organized by Schwuguntia e.V., underscores the need to advocate loudly and visibly for the rights and visibility of queer people.
