Mainz welcomes expansion of funding for midwifery centers by the state of Rhineland-Palatinate
The state capital of Mainz expressly welcomes the announcement by Health Minister Clemens Hoch to extend the funding period for existing midwife centers until December 31, 2028 and to increase funding by up to 20 percent from 2026.
According to Jana Schmöller, Head of Social Affairs for the state capital of Mainz, the state’s decision provides the Midwifery Center with crucial planning certainty while also strengthening local obstetric care. It is particularly encouraging that this decision ensures the long-term continued operation of the Mainz and Mainz-Bingen Midwifery Center. She expressly supports the state’s initiative:
“The Midwifery Center is an indispensable resource for many expectant and young families in Mainz. It not only arranges midwifery services but also offers guidance and personal support during a particularly sensitive phase of life. The state’s decision is therefore a strong signal for families and professionals alike. It enables us to sustainably secure and further develop this important service.”
The state capital of Mainz views the expansion of funding as an important step toward ensuring the quality and accessibility of obstetric care. Especially in times of increasing demands and structural changes in the healthcare system, reliable support for such services is of central importance.
With the planned increase in funding, cost increases can also be better absorbed, and the work of the midwifery centers can be secured in the long term. The city of Mainz will continue to actively support further development and remain committed to strong, locally accessible care for families. In doing so, it is honoring its financial commitments even amid a difficult budget situation, even if the participating district does not do so in the current calendar year.
