Refugee accommodation opened on the Layenhof: Space for up to 300 people

The state capital of Mainz has opened new accommodation for refugees at Layenhof. The facility in modern modular timber construction offers space for up to 300 people.

"People who come to us need more than just a roof over their heads: they need a place where they can find peace, feel safe, and start afresh. With the accommodation at Layenhof, we are creating exactly this kind of space and making an important contribution to ensuring that people can settle in and integrate successfully in Mainz," says Jana Schmöller, Head of Social Affairs.

The accommodation consists of 200 modules that have been combined to form four residential buildings with a total of 96 residential units. Apartments of various sizes were created on a gross floor area of around 4,863 square meters: 41 one-room apartments with kitchenettes and bathrooms, 41 two-room apartments with kitchens, nine barrier-free apartments, and five larger corner apartments.

The residential offering is complemented by two office spaces for administration and support, as well as three social rooms for education, teaching, and community activities. The technical infrastructure is also comprehensively equipped—including laundry and drying rooms, heating systems, and technical and storage rooms.

The outdoor area offers additional space for socializing and everyday activities: a 55-square-meter kiosk or multifunctional room, a playground, 58 bicycle parking spaces, and 21 car parking spaces are part of the complex.

With the new refugee accommodation, the city of Mainz is fulfilling its capacity commitment at Layenhof. A capacity commitment is a binding commitment by state authorities to provide a specified number of places for the accommodation, care, and support of people seeking protection. It creates planning security for the orderly reception of refugees.

The facility stands on a plot of land measuring around 6,136 square meters. Construction of the facility was carried out by Dreßler Bau GmbH, began in mid-2024, and was completed on schedule. Wohnbau Mainz is responsible for managing the property, while social services are provided by the DRK-Kreisverband Mainz-Bingen e.V.
