The find was initially examined as part of the regular playground inspection, but could not be clearly identified. As a precaution, the affected area of the outdoor grounds was cordoned off over a large area. On the recommendation of the playground inspector, the police were called in. They promptly examined the find on site, with the assistance of a sniffer dog, among other things. Even during this inspection, the object could not be clearly identified. 

The outdoor area of the daycare center was additionally monitored by a security service last night. As a precautionary measure, the Rasselbande daycare center will remain closed today. The parents of the children attending the facility were already informed yesterday evening by the daycare center management.

The Rhineland-Palatinate explosive ordnance disposal service was then called in. Two employees of the explosive ordnance disposal service from Koblenz examined the find this morning. After an initial inspection, the object was recovered. It turned out to be the bottom of a bomb, which was probably blown off when the bomb hit the ground. The object was secured and there is no longer any immediate danger. [AG1] 

Regardless of this find, the facility will remain closed as planned on Monday, as a team day for the daycare staff (at an alternative location) has already been scheduled for that day.

The city of Mainz will now consult with the relevant authorities to determine whether regular daycare operations can resume next week. In addition, it will be examined whether and in what form a further investigation of the outdoor area is necessary. 

The city will provide further information and details on how to proceed as soon as new information becomes available.
