Laundry knowledge for World Water Day in the Mainz Environmental Shop

March 22 is World Water Day. To mark this day, the Mainzer Umweltladen is presenting a week-long (23.3.-27.3.) focus on environmentally friendly laundry washing. Anyone interested can test their knowledge in a quiz.

The goal of World Water Day, established by UNESCO, is to raise awareness of the importance of water as the foundation of life for humanity. The UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals also include a goal related to water. Goal No. 6 states: “Ensure access to water and sanitation for all.” This was translated in the Meinz dialect as “en saubere rhoi macht en saubere woi.”

The team at the Mainz Environmental Store took World Water Day as an opportunity to provide information on the topic of eco-friendly laundry. About 12 percent of a household’s daily drinking water consumption is used for doing laundry. Afterward, the water contaminated with pollutants and detergents must undergo a complex purification process at the wastewater treatment plant before it can flow back into the Rhine. If you want to save money on laundry, pay attention to the correct dosage of detergent, for example. You can find out what this has to do with water hardness in Mainz and its various neighborhoods at the Mainz Environmental Store.
