Master plan M³

With the M³ "Green City Mainz" master plan, Mainz is participating in the "Clean Air Immediate Action Program 2017-2020" funded by the German government. In addition to reducing nitrogen oxide emissions, this is also intended to prevent the impending ban on diesel vehicles. M³ stands for integrated, intelligent and networked mobility in Mainz.

Objectives of M³

The aim of the M³ master plan is to develop measures to prevent diesel driving bans. The federal government has set up a funding program for this purpose called "Immediate Action Program for Clean Air 2017-2020." A total of €1 billion is currently available to the municipalities affected (including Mainz) for this program. Work on the M³ master plan was completed by the end of August 2018. It was 100% funded by the federal government.

The main topics of the measures are grouped into five areas of action. In addition to vehicle subsidy programs (electric drives), they include measures to increase bicycle traffic, digitize transportation (e.g., apps, data collection, and traffic control), and connect the various modes of transportation. Another important component is urban logistics.

These topics are being developed jointly by the city of Mainz, Mainz public utilities, and Mainz Mobility. We also have close ties with Wiesbaden and Darmstadt, which are also drawing up similar master plans.
