Any adult with a disability who lives in Mainz can stand for election to the advisory board. This election takes place in the year of local elections. All Mainz residents with disabilities are invited to a meeting. Here, eight members are elected to the advisory board.

The Disability Advisory Board has a total of 15 voting members. In addition to the eight elected persons with disabilities mentioned above, the following persons are also members:

• the Social Affairs Officer of the City of Mainz
• The Disability Officer of the City of Mainz
• four representatives of the city council factions
• A representative of the League of Independent Welfare Services

In addition, the advisory board has advisory members from organizations that offer services for people with disabilities in Mainz.

The Disability Advisory Board advises the city council on all issues affecting people with disabilities. The advisory board promotes exchange between people with disabilities and representatives from politics, administration, and associations. The specific obstacles posed by a lack of accessibility and inclusion are made visible and understandable to those responsible.

This covers everything that happens in Mainz, for example

• Accessibility on buses and trams
• barrier-free apartments
• Barrier-free access to theaters and cinemas
• inclusive services for children and young people with disabilities in daycare centers and schools
• Employment opportunities for people with disabilities

The Disability Advisory Board meets three times a year.

Current issues are discussed and actions planned here. These discussions then give rise to the topics for the meetings of the Disability Advisory Board. The following working groups are currently active:

• The Accessibility and Culture Working Group meets every second Tuesday of the month at 4:30 p.m.
• The Social Affairs, Work, and Education Working Group meets every fourth Tuesday of the month at 4:30 p.m.
