In 1981, women's organizations from Latin America and the Caribbean declared November 25th the Day Against Violence Against Women in Bogotá, Colombia. They commemorated the murder of the three Mirabal sisters, who were killed on November 25, 1960, in the Dominican Republic by the military secret service after months of torture and rape. Since then, women's and human rights organizations as well as public institutions in more and more countries have joined the idea of an international day under the motto "No to violence against women." Numerous national and local campaigns are held every year to draw attention to the still pressing problem of violence against women. Since 1999, November 25 has also been recognized by the United Nations as an official international day of remembrance.

Every year, the Health Section of the Working Group on Violence against Women invites doctors, medical professionals, and specialists in anti-violence work to a training event. The most recent event focused on providing help in medical practices and medical care in cases of (sexual) violence in relationships.
