AKK suburbs: Amöneburg, Kastel and Kostheim
District portrait
When the Rhine was declared the border between the American and French occupation zones after World War II, this resulted in the division of the city of Mainz.
The part of the city on the left bank of the Rhine was later incorporated into the newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate. However, Proclamation No. 2 of the American military government of September 28, 1945, assigned the larger part of the city on the right bank of the Rhine (just under 53 percent of the city area) to the newly founded state of Hesse. After almost 2,000 years, Mainz thus lost its "bridge suburb" and almost all of its industry.
The AKK districts still bear the names Mainz-Amöneburg, Mainz-Kastel, and Mainz-Kostheim today. In addition, the state capital of Mainz still owns considerable real estate on the right bank of the Rhine.
AKK matters today
The population still feels largely connected to Mainz. The representative for AKK affairs of the state capital Mainz is therefore available to them as a contact person.
