Discoveries in the new town
Another discovery in our series takes us to Mainz's Neustadt district.
Even though the district has been around for over 150 years, there are and will continue to be many new developments in Mainz's Neustadt district. These include the redesign of the Rhine riverbank between Kaisertor and Zollhafen. Interested parties can also have their say on how this popular area can be beautified.
A walk along the river is a great way to relax and discover new things. The Frauenlobbarke is one of them. The fountain sculpture commemorates Heinrich von Meißen. The medieval poet, known as "Frauenlob" (Praise of Women), is said to have been very popular in Mainz, especially among female fans.
Nearby is a stone sundial and the "key of the hour striker." A work called "Nomade" has found its place in the ever-growing area of the customs port. Friends of art in public spaces will find even more sculptures, fountains, monuments, and more in Neustadt. They are listed in a directory and can also be easily explored on a walking tour.
It's not only worth exploring the district on foot, but also by bike. From Christuskirche church on Kaiserstrasse, you can follow a new cycle path to Mainz Synagogue and Goetheplatz square. Like many other squares in Neustadt, this square is often a lively and cheerful place. A quieter green oasis is the idyllic Valencia Square, named after Mainz's twin city in Spain.
