Discoveries in the upper town
Another discovery in our series takes us to Mainz's upper town.
This is an ideal starting point for a mental journey through time, whether to Roman Mainz or to the era of the fortress surrounding the city. But first, let's travel to Japan in our minds. There, "Hanami" is celebrated in spring – when the cherry trees are in bloom. In spring, an avenue of ornamental cherry trees in Mainz's Oberstadt district is also in full bloom: Ritterstraße is considered an insider tip for anyone with a romantic streak who enjoys photography. From there, you can take further walks through the green belt.
The upper town is also home to a number of historic sites dating back several centuries, including a Roman theater, the Drusus Stone, gates, towers, and the citadel. The Roman and Fortress Routes are ideal for strolling or cycling. The nearby city and public park is ideal for picnics in the countryside. Young explorers in particular will enjoy a ride on the small train that runs there during the warmer months.
