A residence permit for the purpose of vocational training is a temporary residence permit. If your vocational training extends beyond the duration of the residence permit, you can apply to have it extended.
To extend your residence permit for the purpose of vocational training, you must meet the same requirements as when you first applied.
Your residence permit will then be extended for the expected duration of the training.
An extension is not possible if the Foreigners’ Registration Office has already ruled this out at the time of issuance or the most recent extension.
During a qualified vocational training program, you may work up to 20 hours per week in a job unrelated to your vocational training. Self-employment is not permitted.
Vocational training is considered qualified
- if the vocational training is state-recognized or involves a comparable regulated vocational profession and
- if federal or state regulations stipulate a training duration of at least 2 years.
If your qualified vocational training ends prematurely for reasons beyond your control, you do not have to leave Germany immediately. You may look for another training position in Germany for up to 6 months.
There are no notes or special features.
The residence permit will be extended for a limited period. Its validity is usually based on the duration of the education or training program.
Application deadline: 8 weeks. You should apply for the extension no later than 8 weeks before your current residence permit expires.- Appeal period: 1 month
