Local public transportation (ÖPNV) provides transportation accessible to everyone via public transit, including both scheduled and on-demand services. Local public transportation is defined as follows:
- the majority of passengers travel a distance of no more than 50 km
- the total travel time for passengers does not exceed one hour
Local public transportation provides demand-based connections between residential and work locations, as well as public, social, and cultural facilities. A so-called local public transportation ticket is required to use local public transportation (ÖPNV). This ticket can be purchased online or in person from the transportation associations. It is also possible to purchase discounted local transit tickets.
In Mainz, in addition to the city-based company Mainzer Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVG), there are other public transport companies operating in and around Mainz. The first point of contact is the RMV Mobility Advice Center at the Mainz Transport Center.
