There are always a variety of projects in the 15 districts of Mainz. Take a look at the current list of projects in Mainz and play an active role in shaping urban development, transport, environmental projects and more. On this page you will find current projects from the city districts and information on whether and, if so, how citizen participation is possible.

The project “Rethinking Neighborhoods of the Future” uses the “Citymeile” neighborhood as a case study to examine how downtown neighborhoods can be developed in a sustainable manner.

As part of its efforts to adapt to the effects of climate change, the city of Mainz plans to remove paving from paved areas in the city center and then plant vegetation there.

The Drususwall recreation area in Mainz's green belt is to be renovated in sections. The aim is to restore its attractiveness and preserve the historically significant ramparts.

The state capital of Mainz aims to promote safe, independent, and sustainable mobility for students. In addition to walking, bicycles—and public transportation such as buses and trains—play a particularly important role for secondary schools. These modes of transportation are not only suitable for everyday use, but they also promote independence and help young people experience the city. The state capital of Mainz is one of ten municipalities receiving funding this year from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate for a "Pedestrian Traffic Check." In this initiative, citizens, politicians, and city officials come together to discuss the local pedestrian traffic situation. Here you can find information about participation:

The state capital of Mainz has begun to draw up a municipal heating plan for the city area. The plan is to have a plan in place by mid-2026 that shows how Mainz can be supplied with climate-neutral heating in the future. To ensure that municipal heating planning in Mainz is successful, it is important to involve the citizens of Mainz and all key stakeholders at an early stage and directly. 4th Mainz Youth Conference

At the Mainz Youth Conference, up to 300 young people between the ages of 13 and 17 can develop their own local projects and present them to representatives from city government and city administration. Afterward, the young people implement the projects with the support of city government and city administration. The Youth Conference takes place once a year. Jockel-Fuchs-Platz and open staircase

Jockel-Fuchs-Platz is a significant place for the people of Mainz. Now, a new concept is to be developed that connects the square to the Rhine via an open staircase, fits into our times, and reflects the character of Mainz. As part of the public participation process, a vision for Jockel-Fuchs-Platz and the open staircase is to be developed that is supported by many people in the city. Social conservation statutes - environmental protection statutes

To protect residents from displacement, the state capital of Mainz is currently examining whether a social preservation ordinance (neighborhood preservation ordinance) can be enacted in two areas of downtown Mainz. The goal of a social preservation ordinance is the socially responsible and careful implementation of modernization measures to ensure neighborhood stability and thereby avoid negative urban planning consequences. In Mainz-Mombach, a large multifunctional sports hall/arena is to be built on the site of the "Am Großen Sand" sports hall. This hall will not only be used for school, popular, and elite sports, but also for cultural events, conferences, and other events. Information on participation is available here:

"Wasserwerkswiese" playground - equipping with new play equipment

Several pieces of playground equipment at the Wasserwerkswiese playground were dismantled in winter 2023/24 due to age. Now there is space available again to install new playground equipment. As the playground has sufficient space, a calisthenics facility is also to be built. Information on participation is available here:

Construction work has begun on a new high school in Mainz-Mombach. The four-stream high school, which already started in September 2023 in a temporary building on Lerchenberg, is a "school with a special inclusive profile" and a shared learning environment for students with and without disabilities. The bicycle is increasingly establishing itself in the Mainz metropolitan area as a vehicle and mode of transportation suitable for everyday use. To further promote this development and ensure it is well-positioned conceptually and strategically, the state capital of Mainz will launch the “Radkonsens Mainz” initiative at the end of 2023. To develop a widely accepted concept for the redesign of the town center in Bretzenheim, the association BRETZENHEIM gestalten e.V. is conducting a public participation process. Information on public participation is available here:

Meenzer summer and neighborhood streets

At the suggestion of local residents, a temporary Meenzer Sommerstraße can be set up after all documents have been submitted and reviewed, and the administration can close it to through traffic and parking in public spaces. Information on participation opportunities can be found here:

Creation of a city-wide toilet concept

With a citywide concept for public toilet facilities, the city of Mainz wants to provide citizens and visitors with an attractive range of public toilets. The key criteria for the citywide toilet concept are environmental compatibility, sustainability, and integration into the cityscape. Information on citizen participation is available here:

The Rhine riverbank plays a vital role as a local recreational area for Mainz residents, tourists, and visitors, and significantly shapes the cityscape. However, large sections of the riverbank’s design are outdated, no longer meet current usage requirements, and simultaneously hold great potential for enhancing recreational value and the quality of the visitor experience.

The state capital of Mainz therefore intends to redevelop and redesign the Rhine riverbank in several construction phases. Learn more on this page:

How should the Drais district of Mainz develop by 2040? Future development options were discussed and developed with Drais residents during several events.

Streetcar City Mainz - Sub-project 3 Connection Heiligkreuzviertel and University Hospital

Status: ongoing

A new tram line is intended to improve access to the Heiligkreuz neighborhood. It may also have positive effects for residents in parts of Weisenau and Hechtsheim.

Forum Government Quarter 2023

On November 30, 2022, the city council decided that the Government District Forum, which last met in 2009, should be reestablished. The new forum is to be developed as a comprehensive public participation process in the run-up to an open space competition. The aim is to encourage broad discussion and reach a consensus within the city's community on the project. This should include concrete measures that give the government district its own identity, enhance public spaces, and improve the quality of life and leisure time.

Redesign of Karmeliterplatz

Due to its important inner-city location, Karmeliterplatz is a strategic hub and networking point for pedestrian and bicycle traffic. However, the design shortcomings of the aging square are offset by the modern open space design of the St. Christoph memorial. Various redesign measures are intended to optimize the quality of the space for visitors and users. In addition, the goal of the former federal-state program "Active City Centers" to connect the city center and the banks of the Rhine via Karmeliterplatz and Brückenplatz will be pursued. A contemporary development will be implemented in line with the goals of a climate-resilient city.

Update of the integrated development concept for the city center (IEK 2026)

The IEK 2026 is an update of the Integrated Development Concept for the City Center adopted in 2015 and outlines goals and measures for the further development of the city center.

Streetcar city Mainz - sub-project 2 city center

Status: ongoing

planning of a new tram line from Schillerplatz via Höfchen toward the densely populated Neustadt district. This will also create new detour options.

How should Ebersheim develop over the next two decades? In June 2022, around 200 interested citizens exchanged ideas on topics such as construction, the environment, transportation, social issues, and education. The "Binger Straße" expansion project will create a tram connection from Alicenplatz to Münsterplatz via Binger Straße. Information about the project can be found here.
