Current projects in Mainz

There are always a variety of projects in the 15 districts of Mainz. Take a look at the current list of projects in Mainz and play an active role in shaping urban development, transport, environmental projects and more. On this page you will find current projects from the city districts and information on whether and, if so, how citizen participation is possible.

Unsealing measures in the city center

In response to the consequences of climate change, the state capital of Mainz plans to remove impervious surfaces in the city center and then replant them with greenery.

The Drususwall recreation area in Mainz's green belt is to be renovated in sections. The aim is to restore its attractiveness and preserve the historically significant ramparts.

Mobility plan Mainz

Participation: ongoing

The state capital of Mainz is shaping the mobility of the future together with the people of Mainz. The aim is to make travel in Mainz safer, more comfortable, and more attractive. You can find information about participation here:

School mobility plans - "Better to school"

The state capital of Mainz wants to promote safe, independent, and sustainable mobility for schoolchildren. In addition to walking, bicycles play an important role in secondary schools, as do public transportation options such as buses and trains. These modes of transportation are not only suitable for everyday use, they also promote independence and help young people experience city life. Here you will find information about participation:

Green space in Mainz-Marienborn, Sophie-Christ-Straße

A new green space is to be created on Sophie-Christ-Straße in Mainz-Marienborn. This area is already designated as green space in the development plan. This means that no buildings or parking lots will be built here, but rather a place to linger, relax, and meet—with as much greenery as possible, minimal sealing, and a high quality of life. Pedestrian traffic check

The state capital of Mainz is one of ten municipalities receiving funding from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate this year for a "pedestrian traffic check." This involves citizens, politicians, and city administrators discussing the local pedestrian traffic situation together. You can find information about participation here:

Municipal heat planning

Participation: ongoing

The state capital of Mainz has begun to draw up a municipal heating plan for the city area. The plan is to have a plan in place by mid-2026 that shows how Mainz can be supplied with climate-neutral heating in the future. To ensure that municipal heating planning in Mainz is successful, it is important to involve the citizens of Mainz and all key stakeholders at an early stage and directly. 4th Mainz Youth Conference

At the Mainz Youth Conference, up to 300 young people between the ages of 13 and 17 can develop their own municipal projects and present them to representatives from city politics and city administration. The young people then implement the projects with the support of the city administration and politicians. The Youth Conference takes place once a year. Jockel-Fuchs-Platz and open staircase

Participation: ongoing

Jockel-Fuchs-Platz is an important place for the people of Mainz. Now a new concept is to be found that connects the square to the Rhine via an open staircase, fits in with our times, and has a Mainz character. As part of the citizen participation process, a vision for Jockel-Fuchs-Platz and the open staircase is to be developed that is supported by many people in the city. Social conservation statutes - environmental protection statutes

Investigation: ongoing

In order to protect residents from displacement, the state capital of Mainz is currently examining whether a social preservation statute (milieu protection statute) can be enacted in two areas of Mainz city center. The aim of a social preservation statute is to ensure that modernization is carried out in a socially acceptable and cautious manner in order to maintain neighborhood stability and thus avoid negative urban development consequences. The Gleisberganlage playground will be equipped with new play equipment in response to requests from the neighborhood and a proposal from the Gonsenheim local council. Information on participation is available here:

New construction of a multifunctional large sports hall / multifunctional arena in Mainz

In Mainz-Mombach, a large multifunctional sports hall/arena is to be built on the site of the "Am Großen Sand" sports hall. This hall will not only be used for school, popular, and elite sports, but also for cultural events, conferences, and other events. Information on participation is available here:

"Wasserwerkswiese" playground - equipping with new play equipment

Several pieces of playground equipment at the Wasserwerkswiese playground were dismantled in winter 2023/24 due to age. Now there is space available again to install new playground equipment. As the playground has sufficient space, a calisthenics facility is also to be built. Information on participation is available here:

Am Lemmchen school site: New high school building, replacement elementary school, Realschule Plus, canteen and sports halls

Construction work has begun on a new high school in Mainz-Mombach. The four-stream high school, which already started in September 2023 in a temporary building on Lerchenberg, is a "school with a special inclusive profile" and a shared learning environment for students with and without disabilities. Bicycle consensus Mainz

Bicycles are becoming increasingly popular in Mainz as a means of everyday transport. To further promote this development and ensure that it is well positioned in terms of concept and strategy, the state capital of Mainz is launching the "Radkonsens Mainz" (Mainz Cycling Consensus) process at the end of 2023. In order to develop a universally accepted concept for the redesign of the town center in Bretzenheim, the association BRETZENHEIM gestalten e.V. is conducting a citizen participation process. Information on citizen participation is available here:

Meenzer summer and neighborhood streets

At the suggestion of local residents, a temporary Meenzer Sommerstraße can be set up after all documents have been submitted and reviewed, and the administration can close it to through traffic and parking in public spaces. Information on participation opportunities can be found here:

North of the existing Lerchenberg school complex, a new three-court sports hall is planned for school and club sports. Information on citizen participation is available here:

Creation of a city-wide toilet concept

With a citywide concept for public toilet facilities, the city of Mainz wants to provide citizens and visitors with an attractive range of public toilets. The key criteria for the citywide toilet concept are environmental compatibility, sustainability, and integration into the cityscape. Information on citizen participation is available here:

The banks of the Rhine are of outstanding importance as a local recreation area for Mainz residents, tourists, and visitors, and have a significant impact on the cityscape. However, large parts of the Rhine banks are outdated, no longer meet today's usage requirements, and at the same time have great potential for increasing their recreational value and quality of stay.

The state capital of Mainz therefore intends to redesign the banks of the Rhine in several construction phases. You can find out more on this page:

Drais 2040

How should the Mainz district of Drais develop in the coming years until 2040? Following a unanimous decision by the Drais local council on September 20, 2022, the city administration is implementing the "Drais 2040" project. The aim is to work with the local council and the association of clubs and societies, with the participation of all Drais residents, to develop future development opportunities for Mainz's smallest district. In addition to the planned city bus stop in the middle of the Heiligkreuz district, a new tram line to Mainz city center will contribute significantly to the attractiveness of the new neighborhood. Information on citizen participation is available here:

Forum Government Quarter 2023

On November 30, 2022, the city council decided that the Government District Forum, which last met in 2009, should be reestablished. The new forum is to be developed as a comprehensive public participation process in the run-up to an open space competition. The aim is to encourage broad discussion and reach a consensus within the city's community on the project. This should include concrete measures that give the government district its own identity, enhance public spaces, and improve the quality of life and leisure time.

Redesign of Karmeliterplatz

Participation: in planning, information to follow

Due to its important inner-city location, Karmeliterplatz is a strategic hub and networking point for pedestrian and bicycle traffic. However, the design shortcomings of the aging square are offset by the modern open space design of the St. Christoph memorial. Various redesign measures are intended to optimize the quality of the space for visitors and users. In addition, the goal of the former federal-state program "Active City Centers" to connect the city center and the banks of the Rhine via Karmeliterplatz and Brückenplatz will be pursued. A contemporary development will be implemented in line with the goals of a climate-resilient city.

Update of the integrated development concept for the city center (IEK)

Participation: ongoing

In 2015, the state capital of Mainz developed an Integrated Development Concept (IEK), which now needs to be reviewed and updated, particularly with a view to achieving climate neutrality by 2035. The planning office Urbanista has been commissioned to carry out this process. As part of the update, various workshops with politicians, city center stakeholders, and the city administration are planned. Citizens will be involved through an online participation format and participation events.

As part of the "Innenstadt" (city center) subproject, Mainz City Council and Mainzer Mobilität are planning a new tram line from Schillerplatz via Höfchen towards Mainz Neustadt. Information on public participation can be found here:

How should Ebersheim develop over the next two decades? In June 2022, around 200 interested citizens exchanged ideas on topics such as construction, the environment, transportation, social issues, and education. The "Binger Straße" expansion project will create a tram connection from Alicenplatz to Münsterplatz via Binger Straße. Information about the project can be found here.
