Walking yes, sunbathing no

Correct behavior in the "Mombacher Rheinufer nature reserve"

Mombacher Rheinufer nature reserve

Clear rules for visiting nature reserves (NSG) also apply in Mainz. The exact rules can be found in the relevant legal ordinance.

Visitors are allowed to walk on the paths, observe animals, and enjoy rare plants.

Sign with rules in the nature reserve

In nature reserves, it is prohibited to leave the paths, let dogs run off the leash, camp, light fires, barbecue, make noise, or leave litter behind. Cars and motorcycles must remain outside!

Mombach bank of the Rhine

The "Mombach Rhine Bank" between the industrial area and the boundary with the municipality of Budenheim is the last near-natural floodplain area of the Rhine in the city of Mainz and has been a nature reserve since 1995. The 64-hectare biotope between the Rhine and Sommerdamm is home to many plants and animals that are on the red list of endangered species. They need this protected space and peace and quiet to survive. Great burnet, native black poplar, woodpeckers, and wading birds are at home here. Storks also find food here, and wading and water birds need the shallow waters of the Rhine at this point to forage.

On hot summer days, up to 200 sun-seekers flock here, unfortunately doing exactly what is prohibited: camping, barbecuing, partying loudly, letting dogs run off the leash, littering, and driving cars as close as possible to the banks of the Rhine.

Pictogram board on the banks of the Rhine

The city administration has therefore installed new pictogram signs to supplement the existing official signs for nature reserves and information boards. These pictograms remind citizens to comply with the most important regulations. Compliance with the rules will be monitored more closely this year.

The Parks and Environment Department and the Legal and Public Order Department urge citizens to adhere to the rules in the nature reserve.

Summer, sun, beach for people

Sun worshippers can find a beach vibe on the Rhine, a spot for sunbathing by the river, and a fresh breeze at the following locations:

Swimming in the Rhine at your own risk

Swimming in the Rhine is at your own risk. The river is dangerous even for experienced swimmers due to currents, whirlpools, and the suction created by ships. The DLRG warns against swimming in the Rhine. The state of Rhineland-Palatinate therefore recommends swimming only in standing waters. And another note: the outlet of the Mainz sewage treatment plant is located directly above the Schierstein Bridge.
