Open library

A library that sometimes has "new" books on the shelves every day? This has existed in Mainz since the Kultursommer Rheinland-Pfalz 1994. Back then, the two American-based artists Michael Clegg and Martin Guttmann converted two former electricity distribution boxes into an "open library".

In the year "Mainz - City of Science 2011," the state capital of Mainz, in cooperation with Stadtwerke Mainz, converted additional former electrical distribution boxes into "open libraries." Since then, every district of Mainz has been equipped with an "open library." This gives every resident of Mainz free access to reading material.

The "open libraries" thrive on people taking and adding books – the more they are used, the better.
