3D city models of historic Mainz - lectures on projects in research and teaching
New 3D reconstructions bring historical Mainz before 1945 back to life.
Bringing historic Mainz back to life in digital reconstructions is the aim of current projects at Mainz University of Applied Sciences. These 3D city models were presented at the Mainz City Archives on July 7, 2025. The creators provided interesting insights into the creation, methodology, and content of their work.
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Piotr Kuroczyński, head of the Architecture Institute at Mainz University of Applied Sciences, showed how his city models of medieval Mainz in the years 800, 1250, and 1450 were created, which visitors can currently experience at the Landesmuseum Mainz and in the interim Gutenberg Museum.
Dr. Jan Lutteroth, holder of the tandem professorship for Applied Computer Science and Visualization in Construction, explained how he and his students have been working for several semesters on a digital 3D reconstruction of Mainz before the destruction of World War II, and presented the current status of the model.
Paula Dicke and Jana Ziegler, students of the master's program "Digital Methodology in the Humanities and Cultural Studies" at Mainz University of Applied Sciences and Johannes Gutenberg University, demonstrated how the 3D data obtained from these projects can be used interactively to make urban history visually tangible.
All these projects and works demonstrated how the city archives can be used to promote new research and insights into Mainz's urban topography and architectural history with the help of digital technologies.
