Demko - Democracy communal

The city councils of Rhineland-Palatinate in the early post-war period

Townhouse in Mainz

After the end of the Nazi dictatorship, local self-government became a cornerstone of democracy in Germany. A new website with an extensive database commemorates the democratic new beginning in Rhineland-Palatinate and its often forgotten protagonists. It provides access to data on Mainz city council members from 1946 to 1961.

The website was developed by a project group at the Chair of Historical Regional Studies at the University of Trier under the direction of Prof. Stephan Laux.

The Mainz City Archives supported this project by conducting research and providing image material.
