War memorials in Mainz

Memorial cruiser Mainz

Died for ...?

War memorials, often forgotten, littered with trash, and overgrown, are more exciting than one might think: they are history, they tell history, they make history—to this day.

That is why history students at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz set out to examine these Mainz monuments with their lecturer Prof. Dr. Michael Kißener in the winter semester of 2023/24.

The aim was to shed light on the history of the monuments' creation and their intended message, to research their use in the decades following their inauguration, and, last but not least, to trace the public political debate surrounding the monuments and their current relevance. Each monument has its own history, its own context in which it was created and must be understood. All of this is presented in a digital exhibition based on intensive study of sources and literature.

Presentation of the online project on 11.11.2024 in the city archive

The project was presented by the authors themselves at the city archives on December 11, 2024, and subsequently went online.
