Teaching unit: 1968 in Mainz
Student protests took place throughout Germany in 1968. Protests also broke out at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz. The students opposed the emergency laws, the US war in Vietnam, the Springer publishing house, and what they perceived as the outdated values and norms of their parents' generation.
The lesson plan suggestions, which you can find in the download area below, cover the general situation and three events that are "typical" of the protests in Mainz. The situation in Mainz is also compared with that in Frankfurt am Main. You also have the option of downloading four flyers that illustrate the 1968 movement in Mainz. The module was developed by Kai Hermanns as a project during his voluntary social year in the field of culture.
