When you think of Mainz, Johannes Gutenberg automatically springs to mind – the "Man of the Millennium," inventor of printing with movable type and pioneer of the triumphant advance of the book as a medium. Gutenberg's love of the printed word can be felt everywhere in his hometown: local publishing, book science, printing and book art, reading promotion, and media impressively demonstrate that the connection between Mainz and books still offers a unique diversity today, combining tradition and modernity.
The highlight of the Literary Autumn is the Mainz Book Fair.
The Mainz Book Fair
The Mainz Book Fair has been held since 1999 and is both a sales and information exhibition. It traditionally offers a weekend-long platform for all aspects of books: numerous publishers, small and large bookstores, museums, foundations, associations, artists, scientific institutions, authors, and self-publishers from Mainz and the surrounding area present themselves, their activities, and their products and invite visitors to engage in lively exchange in the light-flooded rooms of the Academy of Sciences and Literature | Mainz. Whether fantasy or crime, novel, non-fiction, or travel guide—book lovers will find everything their hearts desire here. The range of exhibitors extends from children's and youth literature to adult literature.
The concept of the book fair
A colorful supporting program consisting of readings and lectures rounds off the Mainz Book Fair. And younger visitors will also get their money's worth, of course: thanks to hands-on activities, children's theater, and book presentations, there's no chance of boredom in the "children's room." And those who prefer to let their creativity run wild can do so in the specially set up painting and craft corner.
Of course, there is also plenty to eat and drink: during the fair, there is a wide range of hot and cold food, coffee and cake, and beverages.
The Mainz Book Fair is organized by the Cultural Department of the State Capital of Mainz in cooperation with the Mainz Publishers' Association and the Academy of Sciences and Literature | Mainz.
Directions to the Academy of Sciences and Literature | Mainz
The best way to reach the academy at Geschwister-Scholl-Straße 2 in Mainz-Hechtsheim is by public transport.
Take tram lines 50, 52, and 53 or bus lines 62 and 74 to the Kurmainz Kaserne / Akademie der Wissenschaften stop.
If you are traveling by car, take the L425 (Rheinhessenstraße) from/towards Mainz-Ebersheim. Or, if you are coming via the A60 motorway, take the Mainz-Hechtsheim-Ost exit. You can park free of charge on site in the signposted parking lots directly at the academy, at the Mainz-Süd tax office, or at the State Office for Geology and Construction. On Sundays, the parking lot of the neighboring REWE supermarket is also available.
