On March 10, 2022, the state capital of Mainz awarded the founders of BioNTech the city's highest honor: honorary citizenship. At a ceremony in the newly renovated Rheingoldhalle, Mayor Michael Ebling presented the honorary citizens with their certificates:

University Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Christoph Huber,
University Professor Dr. Özlem Türeci,
and University Professor Dr. Uğur Şahin

These three exceptional scientists are being honored above all for their outstanding achievements in the field of medical research and biotechnology and their associated efforts to contain the global coronavirus pandemic. The development of a vaccine in a very short time has brought worldwide prestige and recognition not only to BioNTech, but also to the city of Mainz.
