In February 2018, the city of Mainz decided to award the public transport contract in Mainz to Mainzer Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH (MVG) through a direct award using a public procurement procedure (see City Council Resolution BV 0120/2018).

The starting point for any new award or any significant change to public service contracts, including route licenses, is the prior announcement by the contracting authority. This was made on time on July 2, 2020, in the form of an EU-wide publication.

On April 28, 2021, the Mainz City Council decided to entrust MVG with the provision of transport services in the city of Mainz (see City Council Resolution BV 0542/2021). The public service contract has been in effect since July 7, 2021.
