Mainz Community Foundation
The state capital of Mainz is a modern and vibrant community in which a sense of belonging and civic spirit among its citizens are highly valued.
In order to ensure the city's life-affirming and cosmopolitan character in the long term and to maintain and further strengthen the solidarity and sense of community among Mainz residents, a community foundation was established in Mainz in 2006, which sees itself primarily as a community institution by and for citizens.
The foundation works together with existing organizations and initiatives. It complements their work and enables additional civic engagement. The foundation is supported in word and deed by the administration and council of the city of Mainz.
The Mainz Community Foundation finances charitable projects. These include monument and environmental protection, sports, education and training, science, art and culture, youth and elderly care, and customs, including carnival.
The three founding members are Mayor Jens Beutel, Dr. Wolfgang Petereit (former FDP faction leader in the city council), and Karl Otto Armbrüster (president of the Prinzengarde). The foundation's board consists of seven people. The Mainz Community Foundation's initial capital was €25,000.
Taxation
The "Act to Further Strengthen Civic Engagement," which came into force retroactively on January 1, 2007, makes it easier to get involved in charitable institutions and makes endowments more attractive.
Donations, endowments, and additional endowments are particularly encouraged by the state. For tax purposes, a donation is understood to be a financial contribution to a charitable institution that is subject to so-called prompt use of funds, i.e., it must be allocated to a specific purpose as soon as possible.
The same applies to endowments and additional endowments, in that the respective contribution must be allocated to the real estate assets of the charitable institution. Here, the income is used for specific purposes, not the amount donated itself. Endowments and additional endowments provide sustainable and long-term funding opportunities for charitable institutions, while donations provide immediate support for a charitable cause.
In accordance with its statutes, the Mainz Community Foundation is available for donations, endowments (as the sponsor of dependent foundations), and additional endowments (increase in its own capital).
Further tax information is available directly from the community foundation.
