Mainz-Lerchenberg shopping center - conversion of the arcade
Measure as part of the Socially Integrative City program. The shopping arcade was opened in May 2023.
The Lerchenberg shopping center has been renovated and upgraded. This measure is intended to strengthen and secure local supply in the long term. In addition, attractive lounge areas have been created to encourage people to meet and interact. The shopping center is barrier-free and better integrated into its surroundings.
On Friday, May 12, 2023, the redesigned Lerchenberg shopping center was officially opened in the presence of Interior Minister Michael Ebling and Mayor Nino Haase.
Location
The shopping center is located in the Lerchenberg-Mitte area, which is predominantly characterized by multi-story apartment buildings. The redesigned shopping arcade runs as a pedestrian zone between Regerstraße and Hindemithstraße. At the western end of the arcade is a round square with a fountain, seating, and existing trees (mostly black locust). The fountain square was not included in the construction project. There are two stairways leading to the pedestrian zone from Regerstraße.
Planning
In 2018, based on the results of the planning workshop, funding was applied for to carry out work on the public space of the shopping center—renovation of the passageway. The centerpiece of the shopping center is the current pedestrian area in the row of shops. This was made more appealing and barrier-free in order to make the entire shopping center more attractive to visitors. The measure has a high external impact on the district, as it covers the area with the highest visitor frequency in Lerchenberg.
As part of the redesign, the existing very steep ramps were removed and replaced with a new, barrier-free design. The entrances from Hindemithstraße were also made as barrier-free as possible, and a guidance system for the blind was installed throughout the entire shopping arcade.
