Fair Trade City of Mainz

Mainz has been committed to the motto "Think globally - act locally - Mainz thinks globally" for many years. Fair trade is a key facet of this. The Fair Trade City campaign will promote fair trade at a local level and anchor it sustainably.

Fair Trade Team Raises Funds for the BlechWech Foundation in Cologne

What do bottle caps have to do with sustainability, helping those in need, and Mainz?
Since 2018, the BlechWech Foundation in Cologne has been collecting bottle caps from individuals, restaurants, and other sources to reduce waste in our environment while doing good at the same time. To this end, collection bins are set up in Cologne and, increasingly, throughout Germany; once they’re full, they’re transported to various recycling facilities and recycled. The proceeds from the material are donated directly to SOS Children’s Villages worldwide and used to fund vaccines at the Mother-Child Clinic. This helps protect the environment while supporting a wonderful social project.

This initiative is now being supported in Mainz:
The central collection point is the Umweltladen on Steingasse. Collected bottle caps can be dropped off here, and Fair Trader will handle transportation to Cologne!

Fairtrade Deutschland e.V. will renew the title for the state capital of Mainz in 2025

The state capital of Mainz continues to meet all the criteria of the Fairtrade Towns campaign and will retain the title of “Fair Trade City” for another two years. The award was first presented in 2013 by Fairtrade Deutschland e.V. Since then, the city has continued to expand its commitment to the cause.

  • August 11
  • November 18

Background

A brief review: In April 2011, Mainz City Council decided that the city of Mainz would participate in this global campaign. Fairtrade products are not limited to coffee and tea. The product range extends from flowers, soccer balls, clothing, natural stones, and carpets to confectionery, juices, and sugar. The aim of the campaign is to make fair trade part of everyday life, i.e., to expand the range of fair trade products available in the city, to inform citizens, and to motivate them to buy more fair trade products. To this end, a Fair Trade Team has been set up in Mainz.

Capital of Fair Trade" competition

Every two years, 100 cities and municipalities apply to become the "Fair Trade Capital." The competition is organized by the Service Agency Communities in One World/Engagement Global, and hundreds of projects are submitted each time. Mainz will also be participating in the competition in 2025.
