The Fischtorbrunnen fountain highlights the importance that the Rhine had for the population for centuries: it was an indispensable source of food and livelihood. Fishing boats moored on the riverbank, and many professions were connected with fishing. There were several fishmongers in the nearby Fischergasse.

Architect Rudolf Schreiner did not only design the Fischtorbrunnen fountain in Mainz. He also helped plan the Fichteplatz housing estate for the city. The war memorial on Windmühlenberg hill was also designed by him.

The people of Mainz affectionately refer to the fountain's structures as "Quellmänner un Hering" (spring men and herring). Quellmänner are spring potatoes, or in standard German: jacket potatoes. They are often eaten together with herring.

The Fischtorbrunnen fountain, with its view of Mainz Cathedral and the Rhine, is a great place to relax during the warmer months, whether after a stroll through the city or during a walk along the Rhine and through the Lauterenviertel district, where the fountain is located. In summer, it's not just children who enjoy the cooling effect of the water spray.
