The Gautor in Mainz is another important landmark of the city and is one of the best-preserved medieval gates of the city fortifications. It was a guard and customs station for the trade routes.
Medieval connecting gate
The Mainz Gautor is a stone witness to the city's eventful history. The predecessor to the gate was the three-door, tower-fortified Gaupforte. Since the Middle Ages, it has been the most important connection between the city and the "Gau" – Middle High German for "landscape" (surrounding area).
Since 1998, the Gautor has been reinstalled near its original location at the entrance to Gaugasse. Anyone walking up the narrow, steep Gaugasse from Schillerplatz will inevitably head towards the restored Baroque gate.
