The Great Wine Capitals (GWC) is an international network of currently 11 major wine regions. They all share a very special characteristic that significantly shapes their economic and cultural life: their internationally known and renowned wine-growing regions.

This network is the only one in the world that connects the "Old" and "New" Worlds of wine. Its aim is to promote travel, education, and economic contacts between the following renowned centers:

  • Adelaide | South Australia (Australia)
  • Bilbao | Rioja (Spain)
  • Bordeaux (France)
  • Hawke's Bay (New Zealand)
  • Lausanne | Vaud/Waadt (Switzerland)
  • Mendoza (Argentina)
  • Porto (Portugal)
  • San Francisco | Napa Valley (USA)
  • Valparaíso | Casablanca Valley (Chile)
  • Verona (Italy)

Yantai (China) has also been an observer in the network since 2025.

Mainz and Rheinhessen—the state capital of Rhineland-Palatinate and Germany's largest wine-growing region—have been members of the Great Wine Capitals Global Network since June 2008. This makes them the network's exclusive German representatives. Here, tourism and wine marketing organizations, cultural initiatives, winegrowers, scientists, hoteliers, restaurateurs, and retailers work together toward a common goal: to further enhance the global
competitiveness of Mainz, Rheinhessen, and its wines.
