The Mainz-Bretzenheim Volunteer Fire Department is one of 11 volunteer fire departments in the state capital of Mainz. Together with the professional fire department, its area of operation covers the district of Bretzenheim and parts of the upper town, including Zahlbach.

The IuK unit (information & communication) of the Mainz Fire Department is managed as a sub-unit of the fire department and, during larger operations, manns the ELW2 command vehicle and is available for other activities in the area of situation management and operations management.

As a special task in the city area, they have taken on the function of a standby fire brigade as one of four volunteer fire departments: if the forces of the professional fire department at Fire Station 1 are on a longer operation, the Mainz-Bretzenheim Volunteer Fire Department is alerted to ensure continued operational readiness for the entire Mainz city area. In addition to their own vehicles, other vehicles from the professional fire department are also manned.

In addition to the operations department, there is a children's and youth fire brigade as well as a department for senior and honorary members.
