Since its founding in 1887, the volunteer firefighters of the Mainz-Ebersheim Fire Department have ensured safety in the city’s most remote district.

It is one of three fire departments in Mainz that are on call around the clock for all emergency responses within their service area.

A unique feature in the city is the turntable ladder. The vehicle is used not only for rescues from heights and depths, but also for large-scale illumination after accidents or the removal of hazardous debris following storms. In addition, the DLA(K) (automatic turntable ladder with basket) is dispatched to staff the station when the two permanently manned turntable ladders in Mainz are tied up on calls for extended periods. In such cases, two firefighters depart from a professional fire department station in the vehicle and respond to incoming emergencies.

The fire department draws most of its new recruits from its own youth fire brigade, which has existed since 1975 and prepares young heroes and heroines aged 10 and up for active duty.
