Hechtsheim Volunteer Fire Brigade

Logo of the Hechtsheim Volunteer Fire Brigade

The Hechtsheim Volunteer Fire Department is one of the largest fire departments in the Mainz metropolitan area. Its foundation lies in its long-standing youth programs—in addition to a youth fire brigade for young people aged 10 to 16, there is also a children’s fire brigade for kids aged 6 to 10.

The brigade’s area of operation covers the center of Hechtsheim, as well as the A60 highway, including a tunnel section. Additionally, the Hechtsheim industrial park and the part of the upper town extending to the Pariser Tor fall within its jurisdiction.

In addition to two fire engines, an RW 1 rescue vehicle is stationed in Hechtsheim, which is used primarily for technical rescue operations.

The fire station on Talstraße was built in 1955 by the then-independent municipality of Hechtsheim. After several renovations, the ground floor now features four parking spaces for emergency vehicles and a crew changing room. The upper floor houses a training and recreation room, a well-equipped kitchen, an office, restroom facilities, and a dedicated room for the youth fire brigade.

Despite all the seriousness, there’s also room for fun—in true Mainz style, with their own carnival celebration held at the fire station.

Together with the Friends of the Fire Department, they host their “Fire Department Day” every June—the largest community festival in Hechtsheim.

Support association

The Friends Association provides financial support to the Hechtsheim Volunteer Fire Department, for example by helping to purchase additional equipment. It also funds training and continuing education programs that go beyond regular drills. As a key pillar of support, the association fosters camaraderie within the fire department. To this end, the association organizes and, in some cases, funds outings, celebrations, and field trips. Another key component is youth outreach, aimed at recruiting enthusiastic young recruits.

The Friends Association now has over 700 “inactive” members.
