Mainz mourns the victims in the twin cities of Odessa and Haifa

It is with great dismay and deepest sympathy that the state capital of Mainz reacts to the deadly attacks on its twin cities of Odessa and Haifa over the Easter weekend. The thoughts of the city's society are with the victims, their families and all people worldwide who are suffering from the consequences of war and violence. Mayor Nino Haase condemns the attacks.

According to recent reports, a total of seven people were killed. In Odessa, at least three people, including a toddler, were killed in a Russian drone strike on a residential building. Numerous others were injured. In Haifa, at least four people died following reports of nighttime attacks.

Mayor Nino Haase states: "The horrors of the increasing number of conflicts around the world are always terrible. And they become even more tangible when—as was the case last night—a total of seven people die in attacks in our sister cities of Odessa and Haifa. Mainz continues to stand by all the people in our sister cities, and I thank the many residents of Mainz for their great willingness to help the people in these and other war-torn regions."

The state capital of Mainz maintains close ties of solidarity with its sister cities and continues to support Odessa in particular with concrete measures. On February 24, 2026, the fourth anniversary of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, for example, a fundraising appeal was launched in collaboration with Mainz-based organizations to procure additional generators for Odessa. The campaign was prompted by the ongoing Russian attacks on the energy infrastructure of the southern Ukrainian port city, which repeatedly lead to massive power outages.

The ongoing fundraising campaign is being organized by the German-Ukrainian Society for Economy and Science e.V., the Mainz-Odessa Partnership Association e.V., the Ukrainian Association of Mainz, and the State Capital of Mainz. The goal is to finance additional generators for Odessa. The fundraising target is a total of 25,000 euros.

Donations can be made to the German-Ukrainian Society for Economics and Science e.V. at Volksbank Darmstadt Mainz eG (IBAN DE49 5519 0000 0653 9900 10, BIC MVBMD55) with the reference "Generators Odessa." A donation receipt will be issued upon request. (rpo)
