Update to the "Retail Center Concept" Begins
The City of Mainz is asking retailers for their support.
The state capital of Mainz is updating its “Retail Center Concept” and is asking local retailers to assist with the collection of current inventory data starting Monday, July 20, 2026.
The planning firm Junker + Kruse, Stadtforschung Planung, based in Dortmund, was commissioned to update the Retail Center Concept. The Retail Center Concept serves as an essential urban planning foundation for the development and strengthening of the retail sector in Mainz.
Mayor Nino Haase explains: “The goal of the update is to further develop the retail sector in downtown Mainz and its neighborhoods in a way that is sustainable for the future by using digital analysis tools, to strengthen the central supply areas—and thereby secure local, walkable access to goods and services in the long term. This requires an up-to-date and reliable data foundation. For this reason, a comprehensive survey of all retail businesses throughout the city will be conducted from July 20 to October 31, 2026. Staff members from the planning office will record, among other things, the product ranges offered and the size of the sales areas. The data collected will enable a well-founded analysis of existing supply structures and, at the same time, provide important insights into the development potential of Mainz’s retail sector.”
The surveys are being conducted on behalf of the State Capital of Mainz. Staff members from the planning office can verify their identity with an official letter from the City of Mainz.
“The City of Mainz and the planning office ask all retailers to grant the office’s staff access to their stores for this brief survey. Only by collecting as complete a set of data as possible can a representative picture of the retail landscape in Mainz be created,” emphasizes Mayor Haase.
The data collected as part of the survey will be processed exclusively in compliance with applicable data protection regulations. A grant application has already been submitted for further digital analysis. Personal or business-related data will, of course, not be disclosed to third parties. The results will be published exclusively in anonymized and summarized form. The public will be informed of the key findings of the survey once the data updating process is complete.
The state capital of Mainz would like to extend its sincere thanks to all retailers for their support and cooperation.
