Guided tour on June 26: “Blooming 2.0 – Experience Natural Flora Through Artificial Intelligence!”

To mark Digital Day 2026, Mainz University of Applied Sciences and the Mainz Natural History Museum will offer exciting insights into digital museum concepts on Friday, June 26, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. as part of the guided tour “Blossoming 2.0 – Experience Natural Flora with Artificial Intelligence!” on Friday, June 26, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. The tour takes place in the multimedia special exhibition FLORA and demonstrates how modern technologies open up new avenues for knowledge transfer.

Mainz – As we all know, plants grow out of the ground and not out of a screen – or so one might think… However, the current special exhibition FLORA convinces its visitors of the opposite. With a diverse mix of science, creativity, and digital interaction, it opens up new perspectives on the fascinating world of plants.

FLORA builds on the early German-language herbarium “Gart der Gesundheit” from 1485 and translates analog content—such as illustrations and historical knowledge of medicinal plants—into digital language: Interactive installations and multimedia applications run like a common thread through the exhibition. They combine classic museum content with modern technologies and bring knowledge to life in new ways. Visitors discover how digital tools enrich the presentation of content and turn a museum visit into an interactive experience.

Together with the exhibition’s creators, guests also get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at modern museum work. Professors Anja Stöffler and Benjamin Hohnheiser from Mainz University of Applied Sciences, museum director Dr. Bernd Herkner, and Oliver Beer from the FloraForge Group will personally guide visitors through the exhibition and explain the development, technical background, and unique features of the digital exhibits.

The tour not only offers exciting insights into the projects on display but also encourages reflection on the future of museums. What opportunities do digital technologies offer for education, culture, and science? How can they help reach new audiences and convey scientific topics in a contemporary way? These and other questions will be addressed and discussed together during the tour.

The tour is open to anyone interested—whether you’re a tech enthusiast, a culture lover, or simply curious and want to learn more about the connection between digitalization, artificial intelligence, and museum work.
