Lord Mayor in exchange with representatives of the Persian community
At a round table, Lord Mayor Nino Haase spoke with representatives of Iranian associations and public figures from Mainz about the current situation in Iran and its impact on the local community.
Numerous Iranian associations from Mainz and public figures approached Mayor Haase and requested a discussion on the current situation in Iran. The mayor complied with this request and invited representatives of the Persian community to a round table discussion.
During the discussion, representatives of Iranian migrant organizations, the Bahá'í community in Mainz, and the Iranian student community shared their perspectives and concerns. In particular, students' reports of repression, threats, and assassination attempts against family members and friends in Iran were discussed. Mayor Haase expressed his concern and promised support should an exchange with the Rhineland-Palatinate security authorities become necessary.
At the same time, he emphasized the importance of continuous dialogue within the community and with the urban society. The state capital of Mainz supports initiatives and networks that promote exchange, for example through joint events or high-profile campaigns. Mainz sees itself as a cosmopolitan city and sends a clear signal for freedom, security, and social cohesion.
In this context, the mayor also praised the community's commitment in the public sphere. For example, the Sunday demonstrations that have been taking place regularly for several weeks at the main train station are making a visible contribution to the public debate on the situation in Iran.
People from more than 160 nations live in Mainz. With over 2,500 residents of Iranian origin, the Persian community is the tenth largest international community in the city. It is involved in many aspects of social life, including through personalities such as the chair of the Advisory Council for Migration and Integration, Sima Hosseini, and the recipients of the Federal Cross of Merit, Mehdi Jafari-Gorzini and Behrouz Asadi.
