City Law Committee: 40 km/h on the Rhine axis between Diether von-Isenburg
Today, the city law committee of the state capital of Mainz announced the still pending decision on the speed regulation in the section of the current 30 km/h route at Theodor-Heuss-Brücke / Rheinufer with a view to possible accident blackspots.
In the opinion of the committee, there is no particular risk of accidents, taking into account two more conspicuous spots (the bend at Peter-Altmeier-Allee in Große Bleiche and Brückenplatz). Therefore, in its vote, the city law committee set a new speed limit of 40 km/h in both directions on the section between Diether-von-Isenburg-Straße and Am Rathaus.
"We hope that even those in favor of a 30 km/h speed limit will agree to this regulation," emphasized Rolf Merk, chairman of the City Law Committee.
Mayor Nino Haase: "This decision by the City Law Committee has now created legal clarity. The traffic administration will now implement the City Law Committee's decision as quickly as possible."
Janina Steinkrüger, head of the traffic department, emphasized: "The speed limits on the affected roads will be adjusted on April 1, 2026."
Ten days ago, the committee, chaired by Rolf Merk, had already dealt with the complaint filed by two private citizens and announced the reduction of the 30 km/h speed limit in an initial decision with regard to the issue of "noise protection."
In Neustadt, the speed limit therefore only applies from the Mainstraße intersection to Diether-von-Isenburg-Straße. In addition, the 30 km/h speed limit at the customs port is restricted to the "legal nighttime quiet hours" (10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.) (otherwise, 50 km/h is permitted during the day).
The 30 km/h speed limit has been largely retained on Rheinstraße, starting from Am Rathaus to Dagobertstraße, as well as on Kaiserstraße and Parcusstraße.
