A temporary container facility has been set up at 44 Uhlerbornstraße (west of the cemetery) in 55126 Mainz, featuring classrooms, a teachers’ lounge, a cafeteria, and the necessary support rooms, as well as a portable gymnasium. The container complex and the gym serve as a temporary solution for Peter-Härtling Elementary School until the new replacement building at Layenhofstraße 26 is completed.

The plot of land available for this purpose (see site plan in the appendix) offers sufficient space for the planned container school and, at the same time, is easily accessible for the children due to the nearby residential development in the Finthen district. The plot consists of fallow orchard land with a meadow and a group of trees and shrubs. The existing trees have been preserved as much as possible. The locations of the buildings and the necessary playground areas are arranged around the grove. Individual deadwood trees will also remain on the property for aesthetic purposes.

The planned single-story container facility is divided into three freestanding building sections: a classroom wing, an area for administration and the cafeteria, and a gymnasium. For environmental reasons, the City of Mainz decided to construct the school building on screw piles.

Compared to conventional foundations, screw piles have the advantage of minimizing disruption to the soil.

Elevated wooden walkways and fencing were installed as connecting paths between the classroom wing and the administrative building, particularly in the area of the existing group of trees to be preserved, in order to keep interference with the existing vegetation to a minimum. This allows views of the natural, ecologically valuable surroundings to be integrated into the classroom. The impact of the planned project on flora and fauna was examined and assessed from a natural science perspective. This natural science assessment can be viewed on the City of Mainz’s website.
