In 2022, a participatory neighborhood development process began in the Ebersheim district of Mainz. The focus of the discussion at that time was Ebersheim’s development over the next two decades.

The Office for Urban Research and Sustainable Urban Development coordinated the discussion and participation process titled “Ebersheim 2040—What Does the Future of Our Neighborhood Look Like?” and, on behalf of then-Mayor Michael Ebling and the Mainz-Ebersheim Neighborhood Council, organized two public engagement events on the topic. 

In addition to an informational event on June 7, 2022, at the Töngeshalle featuring then-Mayor Michael Ebling, the district chairwoman Ms. Anette Odenweller, the Director of Urban Development, Ms. Manuela Matz, and a keynote presentation by the Deputy District Chair, Mr. Hubert Heimann, on the topic “Ebersheim 2040 – Future Scenarios, Food for Thought,” a workshop was held on June 25, 2022, covering the following topics, which emerged from the first event:

Mobility
; A vibrant town center
in Ebersheim for children and youth
; Education
; Life in old age
; Future urban development of Ebersheim

Subsequently, the results of the events and the workshop were presented at the meeting of the Ebersheim Local Advisory Council on September 13, 2022.   

Based on the results of the participatory process, the Mainz-Ebersheim Local Advisory Council subsequently developed, in a nonpartisan working group, a strategic plan for the future development of the district. This was unanimously adopted at the Mainz-Ebersheim Local Council meeting on May 4, 2023.
