Freshly renovated - where to put the construction waste?

Environmental tip from the Mainzer Umweltladen

Different types of waste from a renovation

Have you freshly wallpapered your walls, painted your doors, or laid new carpet? And what to do with the leftovers?

Hazardous waste: This includes paint, brush cleaner, thinner, etc. Liquid leftovers must be disposed of either at the hazardous waste collection vehicle or at the hazardous waste collection point at the Mainz waste disposal center in Budenheim.

Exceptions: Emulsion paints are accepted at all recycling centers. Completely hardened paint residues can be disposed of in the residual waste bin.

Completely empty paint buckets and paint cans (with and without a Green Dot) belong in the yellow bag.

Brushes and paint rollers should be dried and disposed of in the residual waste.

Covering film should be disposed of in the residual waste, not in the yellow bag.

Retailers of PU foam cans are legally obliged to inform you where you can find collection points for completely empty cans. In addition, the hazardous waste collection vehicle and the hazardous waste collection point at the Mainz waste disposal center in Budenheim also accept empty PU foam cans.

Used wallpaper is contaminated with adhesives or paints. It must therefore not be disposed of in the paper bin, but belongs in the residual waste bin.

Unused wallpaper also belongs in the residual waste bin, as it is usually coated and contains pieces of wood (woodchip) or plastic. Larger quantities can be disposed of for a fee at one of the two recycling centers in Mainz (Recyclinghof Süd in Mainz-Hechtsheim or the recycling center at the Mainz waste disposal center in Budenheim).

Carpets and PVC floor coverings can be rolled up and registered for collection as bulky waste (tel.: 12 34 34). Cut into small pieces, they can be disposed of as residual waste either in the appropriate bin at your home or at one of the two recycling centers in Mainz.

Cork flooring and laminate: Smaller quantities can be disposed of in the residual waste bin, larger quantities can be disposed of for a fee at one of the two recycling centers in Mainz.

Wooden floorboards and parquet flooring must be disposed of as wood waste at one of the two recycling centers in Mainz, for which a fee is charged.

Tiles are considered construction waste and must be disposed of at one of the two recycling centers in Mainz for a fee.

Please note: Floor coverings from the 1950s to 1970s may contain asbestos (flex tiles, cushion vinyl coverings). If in doubt, have them tested before removing them. Products containing asbestos can only be disposed of for a fee at the hazardous waste collection point at the city of Mainz's waste disposal center in Budenheim and must be wrapped tightly in tear-resistant plastic film upon delivery.
