Immediate medical assistance after rape
Immediate medical assistance after rape was launched at the beginning of 2018 as a pilot project in Mainz and Worms in Rhineland-Palatinate. It is now being continued and expanded as a regular service.
Model project in Mainz
Based on the Frankfurt model for emergency medical care after rape, standardized care structures have also been established in Rhineland-Palatinate since 2018 to make it easier for affected women and girls to access medical care after rape, combined with the offer of confidential evidence collection. At the same time, doctors received training to improve their confidence in dealing with women who have been raped.
Established as a support service
After five years, the cooperation partners from Frauennotruf Mainz and the Mainz Women's Clinic were able to draw a positive conclusion: numerous women took advantage of the offer of immediate medical assistance, and half of them also opted for anonymous evidence collection. The attending physicians consider the examination guidelines to be very helpful. The public relations work also reached women whose rape had happened some time ago and who were now seeking professional support to cope with it.
The project will continue as a regular service in the future. Further locations have been established in Rhineland-Palatinate, including Koblenz, Trier, Speyer, Ludwigshafen, and Idar-Oberstein. It is funded by the Ministry for Family Affairs, Women, Youth, Integration, and Consumer Protection.
Poster and bus advertising
In September 2018, Frauennotruf Mainz e.V. promoted the project with a poster campaign. For two months, two Mainz city buses drew attention to the possibility of confidential medical care after sexual violence at Mainz University Medical Center. In addition, posters with an advertising motif promoted the initiative at the main train station for several weeks starting in October.
