Discoveries in the old town
Another discovery in our series takes us to the old town of Mainz.
Whether it's the market, the cathedral, or St. Stephen's Church, many of Mainz's highlights can be found in the old town. But there is much more to discover besides the well-known sights. If you like, you can join a guided tour of the city and explore it from a new perspective, even as a local.
Themed tours in particular often take you down streets and alleys that you don't often wander through in everyday life. Behind the ruins of St. Christoph's Church, for example, there is another monument to Johannes Gutenberg. It shows the city's famous son at work on the printing press.
Just a few minutes away is Löhrstraße, where ancient Roman warships were discovered in the 1980s. The replica in front of the hotel, which was built at that time, commemorates the spectacular find.
Other beautiful places are also often overlooked. Take the Fischtorbrunnen fountain, for example, located between Liebfrauenplatz and the Rhine. Not far from today's small park, fishermen once moored their boats here to take their goods to the fishmongers. The depiction on the fountain, designed in 1930, reminds some people of a popular dish: jacket potatoes and herring.
There are many places to enjoy delicious food in Mainz city center, which is ideal for dining, shopping, and strolling.
