Discoveries in Hartenberg-Münchfeld
Another discovery in our series takes us to the Hartenberg-Münchfeld district of Mainz.
Anyone walking or cycling around Mainz's Hartenberg or Münchfeld neighborhoods may need some refreshment. At the centrally located shopping center, it's worth taking a look at the back of the passage. There, huge black-and-white walls and a large blue chair catch the eye. If you look at the inscription below the artwork, you will find a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: "We have learned how to fly like birds and swim like fish. But we have not learned to live together in peace."
Those who wish can then continue on to the nearby "Zukunftsallee" (Future Avenue). It was created after the German Unity Day celebrations in Mainz in 2017. The alders, wingnuts, flame maples, red oaks, aspen poplars, and zelkovas have a symbolic character as "freedom trees." They are expected to withstand climate change well in the future.
You can also take a mental journey back in time, especially at the Old Jewish Cemetery, which is even a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The gravestones of the "Judensand" can be explored in more detail on guided tours, and a new visitor center is in the planning stages.
The popular Hartenbergpark with its mini golf course and other green oases in "HaMü," as the district is affectionately known, are also great places to relax.
