Discoveries in Weisenau
Another discovery in our series leads to Mainz-Weisenau.
It is considered the landmark of the district: Mariä Himmelfahrt. On sunny days, the Catholic church of Weisenau exudes Italian charm with its yellow tones and striking tower. It literally towers above the rooftops and can be reached via idyllic alleys. From here and also from the bridge, you have a beautiful view of the town that has grown up on the Rhine.
Due to its favorable location on the river, people have felt at home here for a long time, including the Celts and Romans. When walking or driving through the district, it is worth making a detour to today's Bettelpfad, where exhibits commemorate the former burial road.
Another somewhat hidden gem is an important historical building: the synagogue commemorates the Jewish community that lived in Weisenau for centuries. It is a place with a special atmosphere for prayers and remembrance, concerts and lectures. It is also worth taking a look at the finds, such as ritual immersion baths, that were discovered here. From there, it is only a few minutes to the dance floor, a popular meeting place.
