IG Gaustraße

Gaustraße, or Gaugass' as the locals call it, is one of Mainz's oldest shopping streets. Its origins date back to the founding of the Roman city. The tram line is considered the steepest in Europe without technical assistance.

The merchant community and residents of Gaustraße have joined forces with the aim of making and keeping the street attractive, livable, and lovable. Art, enjoyment, and lifestyle is the motto of this community and reflects the high proportion of artists, studios, and artisans. Gaustraße is considered the Montmartre of Mainz, partly because of St. Stephen's Church.
