Queer im Quartier housing model brings diversity under one roof
The Queer im Quartier e. V. housing model has achieved diversity under one roof. The non-profit association in Mainz's Neustadt district promotes acceptance of people with different gender and sexual identities. Living fairly and accepting differences – there is plenty of room for individual lifestyles in this queer-oriented group, which is open to everyone. Living independently into old age and support from a strong community are just as much a part of the program as intergenerational living.
The group wants to become active in its residential environment and volunteer there. This could be at the Kulturbäckerei, for example, a cultural center that will move into the listed building of the former Kommissbrotbäckerei. But the association also attaches importance to getting involved in the new neighborhood in order to help develop new, good neighborhoods. There are already many ideas that can be realized together with cooperation partners.
The group has been active since 2016, and the association was founded in the summer of 2017. They moved into a barrier-free new building in February 2020. Queer im Quartier is a rental project. Based on acceptance of diversity, solidarity, and mutual assistance, the association members want to live and work together in a committed neighborhood. The association was supported during its development phase with funding from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate.
