Have you gotten divorced or ended your civil partnership and would like to change your name? If your birth name or the name you used before marriage or civil partnership was not your family name (marriage name or partnership name), you have the following options:

• You can revert to your birth name or the name you used before choosing your married name.
• You can prefix or suffix the married name with the following names:
  • Your birth name or
  • the name you used at the time of the declaration of the marital name.  
• You can drop a name that was added before or after your married name during the marriage.

• Divorce or
• annulment of civil partnership

You can submit the declaration of name change at any registry office. It must be certified by a notary or a registrar. The declaration takes effect as soon as it is received by the registry office.

You will receive a certificate confirming the name change.

The marriage register and the birth register will be updated.

  • Final divorce decree,
• When visiting another registry office, you will also need:
  • certified printout from the marriage register and the final divorce decree or
  • certified printout from the marriage register with the divorce entered.
