Change of gender entry and first names
The Self-Determination Act (SBGG) came into force on November 1, 2024. This gave transgender, intersex, and non-binary persons the opportunity to change their gender entry and first names by making a declaration at the registry office. You must register this declaration with the registry office at least 3 months in advance.
Jurisdiction
You can submit the declaration regarding the change of gender and first name(s) at any registry office. It becomes effective when it is received by the competent registry office. This is usually the registry office at your place of birth.
Submitting the declaration
If you wish to change your gender entry and first names, you must register this with the responsible registry office at least 3 months in advance. From the date of registration, you have 6 months to submit the corresponding declaration. After this period has expired, the registration of the declaration becomes invalid.
The registration must be made in writing.
Can the declaration be submitted more than once?
If your gender entry and first names have been changed, you can submit a new registration after one year. Please note that you cannot choose new first names when declaring your previous gender entry. This means that after changing your gender entry again, you will still have the first names you chose in your first declaration.
Note:
If you would like advice before submitting your declaration, please contact the registry office by phone or email.
The responsible staff will be happy to provide you with further information.
